Advice anyone?

If you know me, you know I hate surprises. I was the kid who searched the house for Christmas presents. I check our banking online almost obsessively. I bought a $250 stroller just to practice with it. You get the idea.

The idea of being a father to Twins is - at times - overwhelming. I'm hoping to take the edge off with your help. What were the biggest surprises you ran into as a new parent? What do you wish someone would have told you? I'm looking for total honesty here folks!

Click on the comment button below and leave a note - even if it's anonymous. I look forward to seeing what you all have to say!

P.S. I can't see my feet now!

What's Next

I have another doctor appointment May 1st. They'll only be 2 weeks apart now. Should be routine.

My next ultrasound is May 3rd. I am looking forwad to that. I haven't ballooned so I wonder what its like in there for the babies.

Jason and I have Childbirth Prep classes in June. I think we have a class called Caring For Your Newborn in May.

The babies are expected early to mid-July (safety date is 36 or 37 weeks for twins). Hopefully by June we'll have the nursery completely ready to go AND finally be unpacked from our move. Cross your fingers.

False Alarm!

I bet that got your attention! Don't worry, this wasn't about the babies. We're all fine.

Just after Jason fell asleep watching t.v. and I had turned it off, I realized my kitty Junior was eating something (I thought it could be a bit of loose fur). I checked anyway and saw a partially-chewed pill on the counter. OH NO! It was one of two I take at night and I couldn't find the second one. Of course, I panicked, and, after checking Junior's mouth for any sign of the pill, woke Jason.

Neither of us had ANY idea what to do! Luckily I had left a computer on and frantically searched the internet. Apparently Hydrogen Peroxide will make your cat or dog throw up after ingesting poison (if its recommended that you induce vomiting). OK. 5 ml of hydrogen peroxide (the brown-bottle kind that's 3% hydrogen peroxide and 97% purified water) goes down Junior's throat. He should throw up 15-20 minutes afterwards, it said.

THEN I found the pill. Thank goodness!! But poor Junior. He wasn't feeling very well after that. He didn't throw up either (which can happen even with hydrogen peroxide -- you're supposed to give the pet more if it didn't work the first time).

This morning he was right as rain. Well, if this was a TEST for new parent crisis situations, I think I failed miserably!

Reflections from a new father

There's nothing like an approaching birth to change your opinion on kids.

I've always loved kids. I've always known I was going to be a father someday - and I looked forward to that... someday.

Even last fall, I wasn't sure I was ready - I wanted to "wait a little longer". Pauline and I decided we'd just let nature take it's couse. I assumed that course would run a little longer. Then Pauline came down from the bathroom one night and said "I think I'm pregnant!" and my entire reality changed.

It took a day or two for the news to sink in. By the time the doctor's office confirmed we were expecting a little bundle of joy, I was starting to get a little excited. Then after the first ultrasound - when we found out it was twins - I was pumped.

My attitutde has done a 180. I can't wait to be a father! (Let's see how I feel after the first two weeks, right?)

Childbirth classes are HOW much?

Guess how much a 2-day childbirth seminar is running these days at the local hospital: $95.00! Do they include a 4-course meal? Do you get an after-dinner mint? Nope. And we have to wait until mid-June to take it. Sorry, all other classes are full. Well we COULD have taken it the day of Brenda's baby shower... No.
Okay babies, just wait a little longer...

Work is going well for those who are wondering. The babies are most active in the evening and at night. Lately Hannah and Scott have been VERY active, usually just before I have supper. Now it seems they're content for a little while. Wednesday night, even after midnight, it was a little thunderstorm in there! I just stayed awake playing solitaire and filled out my hospital pre-admission forms. No sweat.

So many things to buy, so little time!

Jason bought the twin stroller. Well, TRAVEL SYSTEM. It's as big as a shopping cart. No Kidding! And I have to figure out how to fold that thing and fit it in the trunk of my car?! At least the car seats have snap-in bases. No fumbling/buckling/unbuckling. The travel system only comes with one of two car seats so we'll need to get another. And two more snap-in bases for Jason's car...

You wouldn't believe the list I compiled for all the things we'll need BEFORE the babies are even born. Wow. Just know that what's on the registries is a condensed/pared down version. We have the cribs (thanks to the Muellers) and the double stroller (thanks to Jason) and will have the dresser/changing table (thanks to the Conrads) and a few toys and clothes already (thanks to family) but whew! Can we get it all in 3 months?!

Another trip to the doctor

Monday the 17th my doctor appointment went well. No crazy trips around the twin cities to get to the right place this time. My tummy is at 30 inches (last appt. was 26.5 inches). I've lost 10 lbs. and gained 7 during my pregnancy. Just wait, the weight and inches will come!

You know that whole peeing in a cup thing at the doctor's office? Well, try it when you can't see the toilet seat you're sitting on let alone anything else! I wonder when I'll stop being able to see my feet. (I can just see the tips of my toes right now).
My innie belly button is already almost an outie! It'll be an itty bitty outie though. Teeny weeny belly button ('cause I was a preemie).

I'm ready now!

How do I know I'm ready for fatherhood?

* I find myself tivo-ing "Bringing home baby" and other newborn-related shows on Discovery Health Channel. (Its a little sad actually. Our DVR is full of home-improvement shows, a couple of sitcoms, and baby shows.)

* I laugh at new fathers who gag at the sight of a dirty diaper.

* I've spent way too much time trying to figure out how I'm going to fit two car seats and all my samples from work into the car.

* The thought of an all-Barney channel isn't quite as disturbing as it once was.

* I have rough sketches of a "Thomas the tank engine" play-set that would run track through-out the entire house.

* I know who the Wiggles are.

I'm pretty pumped!

Life's a buffet

Today (Easter day) Jason and I went to Chammp's for a brunch buffet. Mmmmmm. I can still taste the bacon. Oh boy am I being spoiled.

My favorite place to eat recently is Arby's/Sbarro's. I get the slice(s) of cheese pizza, the curly fries, the roast beef sandwich, the raspberry iced tea... Mmmmm.

My cravings have come and go (including a short pickle phase). I don't think I've had any bizarre cravings. Jason hasn't had TOO many late-night grocery store trips (but I'm sure he's counting). Right now I want potatoes and carrots. I always crave fruit and smoothies. I HAVE to have raspberry or lemon iced tea. Constant favorites include chinese food, pizza, Fritos/Corn Nuts, kid's cereal, spaghetti and apples. (Don't worry, I don't just eat junk food!) I avoid chicken, fish-smells and pepper. I am pretty picky with spiced and strong-smelling dishes. I'm also afraid to eat soup because I got sick off it early on; I don't want to stop liking it!

Pregnancy isn't all eating and sleeping ... OK most of it is. But hey, only about 3 months to go!

Baby likes

The babies behave in strange ways! Yesterday we had to do a few things in Maple Grove, so we stopped by my parent's house to say "Hi". Pauline was relaxing in a glider-rocker they have when Hannah started rolling around. She thought it was cute, but when she stopped rocking, Hannah started kicking. Our little darling was trying to tell Pauline to keep going!

We've always joked that Hannah has fetal ADHD because she's been the one who is the most active. During our first ultrasound she wouldn't quit doing backflips.

Here I was thinking karma was going to make my son a demon-child to get back at me for all the trouble I caused my parents. A boy I can handle.

Maybe karma is giving me a demon-child daughter... because I'd be putty in her little hands. ;-)

Auntie Amanda's blog

Amanda started a blog too! It's at http://supermuellertwinsauntie.blogspot.com/
See the links (on right side of screen) to go there. (Great) Aunt Jackie's blog is there too.

Excuses...

Sorry about the dealy in posting. The truth is, there hasn't been much to report! Pauline is doing fine. The babies are using her internal organs as punching bags - otherwise they're doing fine too.

Pauline goes in for a routine check-up next week (Monday) and we have our next ultrasound on May 3rd.

I apologize again for not having posted more over the last few days. I hope these images of cute kittens will make up for it...

No... we didn't get any more cats - I just found these on a Google image search.

Scotts everywhere!

So there's Scott (Grandpa Mueller) and Scott (baby). Then there's Uncle Scott (McGillivray), Great Uncle Scott (Warren) ... any other Scotts? Hrm. That's still a lot of Scotts.

Yes, we will have a lot to do in the nursery. Lots of little projects. One good thing is it helps time go by. The first 2 trimesters went by quickly and now it's coming down to a crawl. I guess when you have 2 little creatures inside you constantly reminding you they're there (punch, kick, poke, stretch...) it makes you ask "So when are they coming out?"

No, I'm really not THAT bad... yet. I ran into another pregnant lady at Sam's Club. The poor woman was HUGE. Made me feel teeney weeney in comparison. She was only 4 days away to her due date and still running around wild!

-P

Bliss has arrived

We've got the chair-rail up! *Phew!* Now the hard part - a pair of book-shelves and a bench on the wall with the window. It's going to look really cool when we're done. Scott (the grandpa, not the unborn child) and I will be working on the plans over the next couple of weeks. My hope is, by May, I'll have a few days to put it all together.

There's still a ton of stuff that used to be in the nursery that needs to be put away. It will eventually go into our third bedroom... but before that can happen I need to move my work samples out to the garage. There won't be enough room in the garage for things until we're done with the construction / remodeling. Our house is a giant game of Tetris!

We're buckling down to get it all taken care of -- I mean, we're running out of days to finish these projects. Nothing like a deadline to make you serious, huh?

Hey what about that Nursery theme...

Oh duh. I never said that we (meaning I) are going with a Noah's Ark theme. I've always loved Noah's Ark stuff! (Thank you US Bank gals for the Noah's Ark wooden toy set!)

Here is a photo of the bedding we registered for. It's called "Two by Two." (Babies R Us.) Hint hint.

Isn't it adorable?

-P

It's alive!

Ok, lumps or no, it's crowded in there, and they need room to fight, right? (See Jason's last post).

Well, some days they behave and sleep and sleep. This week has been a wee bit different. I think Hannah is practicing her humback whale moves. She's horizontal under my bellybutton and likes to do push-ups. She also likes lifting Mommy's ribcage sometimes (ouch).
Scott: well, Scott likes to snuggle his head right into the bottom of my right-hand side! He'll sleep there but oh boy is it a pain when he head-butts. I think that's his "happy place." I also think it's a primo spot from which to kick his sister (he's head-down).

About the photos. (See below). I hate having my picture taken as some of you know. But I suppose it's my belly you'll be focusing on anyway, so enjoy! I'll try to keep up on them every few weeks now. That picture was taken sometime late morning. The twins like to stretch out the most in the evening, especially around dinner time.

Geez, you know what's funny about my tummy? I literally have to hold it up when I get up in the morning to the bathroom! It's that crowded.

I lost about 10 lbs. after I got pregnant and stayed that way up until about a week ago. Gained 5 whole lbs! Yay. Dr. said that my body would find an equilibrium with the babies and no weight gain wasn't a bad thing. The babies take what they need. But since they're getting bigger I'm glad I'm gaining now. Hopefully I'll be building muscles too in that tummy because we have about 3 mos. to go. The babies are already over 1 lb. and gaining! My little monsters! Our next ultrasound is in early May.

If you didn't know or were wondering, we're going to have a planned C-section. With family history and all, it's safest for the babies. I could try naturally but if someone is sideways or head-up they'd have to do a C-section anyway. I think it's better to have everything planned and with luck will go smoothly -- less trauma on the babies.

I know I haven't written in the blog much. Really a lot of my spare time is spent sleeping! All the energy taken up with the pregnancy can zap me. I'm trying hard to regulate my schedule but I suppose that it will change again as the babies get closer to their birth date.

One thing that is a mixed blessing is that I work 2nd shift 2-10:30 p.m. Jason works days, usually getting up 6-8 a.m. and is out there door soon after. I leave for work before he gets home; and he's in bed asleep before I get home. I have Fridays and Saturdays off, and work in the evening on Sundays, so we have some time together. The blessing in the long(?)-run is that we'll be able to take "shifts" with the babies with only about a 4(?) hr gap in between, assuming Jason will get home before 5:00. We're going to look into getting a nanny (college age) to work about 4 hrs 4 days/week since it will be less expensive than 2 babies in day care. New-Grandma Mueller and Grandma Conrad :-) will be helping a lot after the babies are born while I'm on work leave (planning about 6 wks.) so I'll be grateful for the help. That flexibility will be so great, especially if I'm having a rough time after the babies are born. I'm sure I'll see a lot of Aunt Amy and Aunt Amanda too!

Hm. This post is getting a lot longer than I expected! Maybe I'll have to have a table of contents. I hope you read all of Jason's entries. He's so excited and it's great to see what he thinks about all of this. I know he's overwhelmed at times (like any new Dad would be) and worries a little too much, but he's riding it all pretty well (or at least seems to be!) What an impact on our lives! He's going to be a great Daddy.

OK I better save more chit-chat for another post. Guess I had a lot to catch up on. I've never been good with journals.

Oh, how I love hyperbole

Ok, so maybe I won't have the "motherload" of pictures tonight... or "several"... or even "more then two". In my mind, I took a lot more pictures of Pauline than I did on the camera... or something. I'm a confused man, what can I say?

Here are a couple new images of the belly...

Now, I know my job is to be a loving, supportive husband and talk about how magical the whole pregnancy has been. To be honest, sometimes Pauline's belly freaks me out. With twins, there's not a lot of room in there and you can actually see when one is sleeping on the left or right side. You can kind of see what I'm talking about in the pictures.

We watched Aliens vs. Predator early on in the pregnancy and I'm afraid the little guys may have gotten some bad ideas.

I'm serious... it can be really strange to wake up and see your wife has a protruding lump on the left side of her abdomen!

Pauline if you're reading this... I mean strange in a good way. ;-)

Picture motherload

You are going to hit the photo motherload today. I have to finish off a few things for work tonight, then I'll be uploading more belly pictures and - yes - an image of Pauline's face.

Unlike my photo... her's will be real.

I got nothin'

Not a lot going on in the land of twins today. Work has kept Ma and Pa Mueller busy, so there's been no nursery work and the next doctor appointment is still a week or two away.

Speaking of work, I've had a request for a picture of Pauline from co-workers who have never met her. The problem is finding a wife-approved image to post on the net. We actually took a few pictures of her belly - she chose the one you couldn't see her face in! I'll work on finding something she can be comfortable with.

Until then, enjoy this artist's rendition of me...

It's close... but I think the artist could have done a better job with my nose.

Hehehe... I like doing this blog way too much.

What does bliss look like?

I know what you're thinking. "Jason! Your wonderful, ahem, 'drawing' gives me a taste of what the chair-rail bliss looks like... but I need a little more!"

Well, fear not. I've got more...

Nice, ah? I'm sure it will look much better when Pauline is able to work on it and get me out of the decorating picture!

The belly

The belly is getting bigger! Pauline shows no matter what she wears now. It's fun to see the babies move around day-to-day in there.

(click picture to enlarge)

It's great, isn't it!?!

- J

The nursery - a work in progress

After a solid day of work on the nursery, Pauline and the Mueller men (Jason and Scott - the grandpa, not the unborn baby) have accomplished quite a bit!

The cribs are built, the blinds are up and the curtain rod is ready for... curtains. As you can see, the cats are still no help at all.

Most of Sunday was spent working on the chair-rails. They've been cut and painted. They just need a touch-up and we can hang them up! You can see what kind of an effect that will have...

I know, I know. It is a masterpiece, isn't it? I don't know why I'm not in an art-related field like Pauline!

That's all for now!
